Saturday 20th October, Fargate 2pm
This Saturday the Stop the War Coalition is going to be leafleting on Fargate from 2pm to a background of funky beats.
The musical twist to the campaign is courtesy of a new DJ collective Beats Not Bombs, formed by local DJs who want to use their skills to support the Stop the War Coalition that is calling for an end to the attacks on Afghanistan.
Mark Wilson will be doing the hour and a half set´ on Fargate on Saturday, mixing in samples of political speeches with dance tracks. So that people hear music they like but also have to think a little.
He says, It´s about trying to engage people. It´s also about how anybody can be a DJ or a rock star, and it´s important when stuff like this is going off to do something. It´s about putting the politics back into fun. Not the other way round. People talk about putting the fun back into politics, but it seems to me like a lot of people go out and have fun already. This is about using music to create a more social agenda.
The Beats Not Bombs Collective is planning a benefit night for the Stop the War Coalition in the near future. And DJs will be on stage at the post-demonstration rally on Devonshire Green on the 27th of October.
In the meantime look for alternating DJs on Fargate on Saturdays at 2pm.
