Sheffield Indymedia is part of a global network of alternative news sites where anyone can post their own news.

Sheffield People and Planet campaign against world poverty and for human rights and environmental protection. They are the largest student campaigning group at the Unversity, and have recently forced the Union to sell only fair trade coffee in its outlets and to push ExxonMobil off campus.

Sheffield Social Forum has regular meetings where those who attend can speak about a range of issues and find others to organize action with.

Sheffield Stop the War Coalition the city centre local group of the national campaign.

Sheffield Palestinian Solidarity Campaign.

Nether Edge Against War one of several neighbourhood antiwar groups around the city.

Sheffield CND, the local group of the National organisation. Currently campaigning against Missile Defence and against Boeing in Sheffield.

Yorkshire CND's site has information about meetings and actions.

Sheffield-Iraq was a local campaign against war and sanctions on Iraq. A Sheffield delegation of people was sent to Iraq in 2000 and the campaign now has an provides excellent photographic material.

Sheffield Refugee and Asylum Co-operative is set up to help distribute materials amongst Sheffield's Asylum seekers and refugees.

Nine Ladies Action Camp is a camp set up to stop quarrying in the Peak District national park. The stone is being used for the USA (where environmental laws stop them digging up their own countryside) and for work on the Houses of Parliament. This is the nearest protest camp to Sheffield.

Peat Alert - the site for the campaign to save Thorne and Hatfield Moors from being ravaged by US multinational Scotts.

Sheffield Friends of the Earth and on (national site) is the local group of the national organisation.

Pedal pushers promotes the interests of cyclists in Sheffield by encouraging the Local Authority and other bodies to improve cycling facilities AND aims to To raise the profile of cycling. There is also an e-mail list you can join at their site.

Sheffield Greenmap Project for those seeking out the greener side of life in Sheffield. eg. looking for a farmers' market, renewable energy site, recycling point.

Heeley City Farm tackles inner city problems of poverty, inequality, prejudice and lack of opportunity. It supports community regeneration and self help within environmentally friendly and self-sustaining systems, using the background of a mini farm, community gardens and related resources."

Direct Action is a national anarchist magazine but based in Sheffield.

Sheffield Anarchists are no longer going but their words live on.

Free People is a Sheffield site with a global outlook.

Collectable Anorak is a local anarcho zine site. Regularly updated.

Vanguard Online is a non-profit, Sheffield based e-zine which tries to promote free speech and discussion. Currently contains some articles on Seattle. They’re always on the look out for political writers.

The Forum is a Sheffield site looking at gay and bi-sexual issues.

NATFHE Sheffield Union is the trade union and professional association for lecturers, researchers and managers in further and higher educationfor Sheffield college.

Indymedia UK is an excellent source of information with a headlines news section and a newswire where anyone can write their own stories.

Schnews This Brighton based collective has been turning out excellent alternative weekly news since, umm, 1994. Available free, via e-mail or paper or their site. Large database of campaigns and activist groups.

Indymedia.org The main site has stories from around the globe.

Urban75 is one of the busiest alternative sites on the web. With more than just news, it has a sections on drugs, rave and football plus an excellent discussion board where you can take part in online discussions.

AlterNet.org is a US based alternative media web site. Although based in San Francisco excellent articles of interest to activists everywhere can be found via the search engine.

A-Infos is supposed to be news and information for anarchists but is actually much broader than that with a superb mix of stories from all over the world. The e-mail list is available in different languages but can get overwhelming with up to 10 e-mails a day.

Corporate Watch is the site of the magazine with lots of information about many of the worst companies. Also have a new news list - send e-mail with “subscribe” in the subject line to mail@corporatewatch.org

Free Radical is the site of US activist, journalist L.A. Kauffman. Well written social comment on the protest movement - another good e-mail list.

Labournet provides a range of news from around the world.

Protest.net provides info on protests from around the globe. Get involved whereever you are.

Counter Punch - alternative US news zine.

The Struggle site has 2,600 pages on Zapatistas, abortion rights, anti-racism, trade union and community struggles in Ireland, the Spanish Civil War, Russian revolution, African anarchism, Eastern European anarchism, revolutionary songs etc. with 50 to 100 new pages being added every month.

Starhawk is an american writer/activist and writer who has been active since the sixties. Her site contains excellent and insightful writings on her experiences around the globe involved in the anti-globalisation movement.

Uncaged is a national anti-vivisection campaign but based in Sheffield.

a 16 site is about mass protest on April 16th to break up meetings between the IMF and World Bank in Washington DC.

The Ruckus Society was one of the main groups involved in the protests at Seattle. They train people in direct action skills and their site has a number of useful training manuals covering things like: media, how to organise direct action, climbing skills, and even how to hang yourself from a billboard?!? The site also has news of direct action and a photo gallery of various actions, camps etc.

Reclaim the Satyagraha is a UK site about mass action protests for those wishing to use non-violence (not necessarily just pacifists). Discussions are planned at the Mayday conference in London.

Adbusters is the superb site of an excellent Canadian magazine. It recently won the Webby Awards for the best activist site. Professional and artistic this site demands to be visited.

Subvertise is a site with loads of subvertised images in lots of different catagories.

Developmentgap.org This is an excellent site for those interested in structural adjusment and neo liberal reform, and its effects on the Third World.
